Why prepare for this setting?
The NCI includes feeling upset after an argument among possible emotional smoking cues. That explains why this setting is worth considering; it does not establish the cause of your own urge or make a household disagreement a withdrawal diagnosis.
Make the pause usable before the conversation
For an ordinary conversation you are free to pause, you might say, ‘I want to stop talking for now; we can decide later when to discuss the schedule.’ This is an example, not a script the other person must accept. Do not promise a return time you cannot keep or make them responsible for monitoring whether you smoke.
Check the practical constraint first. If you are cooking, minding a child or responsible for someone else's immediate needs, arrange a safe stopping point or an agreed handover before leaving. If that is not available, pause the discussion while continuing the necessary task. Choose an accessible non-smoking place rather than a route past the tobacco shop, and an ordinary activity such as sitting or clearing your own cup; neither is a treatment.
Worked example: the evening chores are disputed
Fictional example: Alex and a housemate disagree about washing dishes. Alex has often gone to the balcony to smoke after this conversation. Before talking again, Alex picks the living-room chair instead and considers the sentence, ‘I'm stopping this discussion for now.’ No one is asked to police cigarettes or settle the whole dispute.
The conversation becomes heated while Alex is cooking. Leaving immediately would leave the cooking unattended. Alex stops debating, attends to a safe stopping point for the cooking, then takes the planned pause. The chair is now occupied by a visitor, so Alex chooses another suitable indoor place rather than insisting on the original location or going to buy cigarettes.
Later, if a further conversation is appropriate, the question is specific: ‘Who can wash up tonight?’ The long-standing disagreement may remain. Alex can decide on another time without making a cigarette the step between discussions. The example shows how a plan changes when circumstances change, not that it resolves anger or improves quitting outcomes.
Review the failed condition, not the other person's character
Ask which part was unusable: leaving a task, finding a place, or trying to settle too much at once? Change that part for a future ordinary conversation. An optional private note need contain only ‘find a second pause location’, not names or a transcript. Asking a willing supporter for company is separate from asking them to judge the dispute.
For recurring smoking situations you cannot plan around, qualified support can help discuss the obstacle. In England, the NHS service finder is an entry point; confirm access with the service. Elsewhere use the appropriate local service. Questions about persistent distress, symptoms or personal treatment belong with a qualified professional, not with this household plan.

For ordinary disagreements only. This is not relationship therapy, blame assessment or a safety plan for threats, violence or coercion. Do not return to an unsafe interaction to complete it; immediate danger calls for local emergency help. Do not change prescribed treatment on this basis.
