A real questionnaire makes the label less mysterious

Perski and colleagues' 2022 English survey analysis classified the most recent attempt using a list of aids. Selecting none of those options was its unaided category. The list included pharmacological support, e-cigarettes, face-to-face and telephone support, written self-help, digital support and hypnotherapy. This is a reporting definition, not an endorsement of all listed aids.

The question concerned an attempt within the previous year, not every attempt in a lifetime. The analysis studied unsuccessful attempts among current smokers; it was not a trial establishing which aid someone should choose. Check the study population and exclusions before applying its category elsewhere.

Classify the attempt, not the whole person

Everything in this exercise is fictional. A schedules a stop date two weeks ahead and uses none of a questionnaire's listed aids during that attempt. A can be both planned and unaided. B decides to stop today and uses telephone counselling: the sudden decision does not make the attempt unaided.

C uses no medicine but follows a digital cessation programme. If the questionnaire counts digital support, C is not in its unaided group. If a paper gives no assistance definition, do not guess C's classification from ‘no medicine’. None of these invented records specifies whether the smoking outcome was met.

Four questions that should not be collapsed

Assistance asks what help was used. Abrupt versus gradual concerns how smoking was stopped; planned versus spontaneous concerns the decision process; success requires a separate smoking outcome. A methods review notes that ‘cold turkey’ has been used for both no assistance and abrupt stopping, and that assistance definitions vary.

For a paper, put the exact assistance options beside its start and outcome measures. Was written self-help included? Was informal encouragement asked about? Does aid use mean any use during the attempt or only use at its start? Where a definition is absent, ‘unknown’ is more accurate than assuming all studies use the same rule.

A later call does not erase the earlier record

In the fictional exercise, A later contacts a service. Whether that changes the recorded category depends on the study's attempt window and coding rule. ‘Unaided at the start’, ‘no listed aid during the whole attempt’ and ‘most recent attempt’ are different statements. Record the wording and chronology rather than changing the category yourself.

An attempt can end without the intended result and still be an attempt under the study's definition. Conversely, a past unaided attempt does not require future attempts to remain unaided. A label is not an identity, a courage score or an instruction to avoid support.

Use the label for reading, not selecting care

A finding that many attempts used no counted aid would describe frequency, not demonstrate comparative effectiveness. Do not convert it into ‘help is unnecessary’ or a personal probability. NHS information offers UK professional-support routes; confirm current local arrangements for a personal question.

This page classifies public research records, not your history. It collects no attempt dates, smoking details or health inputs. A private question for a professional can be simply: ‘What support is available, and what would it involve?’

What to keep in mind

  • Check the assistance options and the attempt window.
  • Unaided is not a synonym for abrupt, spontaneous or successful.
  • A past category does not forbid future support.

Research-reading education, not a recommendation to quit without help. A/B/C and their chronology are entirely fictional; no personal method or outcome prediction.
