Two different questions about mood
Feeling low early in a quit attempt and mental health measured later are different outcomes. The 2021 Cochrane review compared people who stopped with people who continued smoking, using follow-up of at least six weeks. That minimum was a study-entry rule, not an instruction to wait six weeks for help.
The review found an association with improved depression-symptom scores, with very low certainty for that estimate. Changes in circumstances over time can confound comparisons. A symptom score is not a diagnosis of depression, and a group result cannot explain today’s mood or promise when an individual will feel better.
Ask for support around the actual difficulty
Fictional wording for a consultation: “Since this change, I am struggling to begin ordinary tasks and have pulled back from people. I would like help understanding what is happening.” This describes impact without naming a cause. A supportive conversation need not depend on completing a mood diary or proving withdrawal.
If the feelings worsen, persist, are hard to manage or disrupt everyday activities, talk with a qualified local health professional. If you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide, tell someone you trust and seek professional support without waiting for a withdrawal deadline. If you face immediate danger or cannot stay safe, contact local emergency or crisis help now. You do not need to prove that quitting caused the problem before asking for help.
