Three fictional statements, three different limits

Invented public wording only; the third column contains unknowns, not allegations. No efficacy data are provided.

An invented declaration with three different connections

This example is entirely fictional, with no real organization, study or result. Imagine a paper comparing two arrangements of quit-smoking information. A municipal grant covers research costs. A messaging supplier provides reminder delivery at no charge. One university author separately reports paid consulting for that supplier. The paper says university researchers performed the analysis and that the supplier had no role in analysis.

The grant, free delivery and personal consulting are three connections, not one. ‘No role in analysis’ does not tell you who chose the comparison, selected the follow-up, held the complete data or controlled publication. Nor does the consulting declaration show that the author altered a result.

The table preserves what this imaginary report actually says. Blank information remains unknown. Do not relabel the study ‘fully independent’ or claim the supplier suppressed results from these sentences.

Funding and personal interests belong in different statements

CONSORT 2025 distinguishes sources of funding and other support, the funders' roles, and authors' financial or other interests. Support can include services or equipment rather than money. ICMJE also separates direct support for the work from broader author relationships and activities.

Look at funding, acknowledgements, author affiliations, competing-interest statements and linked disclosure documents together. ‘No external funding’ does not rule out employment, consulting or a patent. An absent statement is not the same as an explicit declaration of no relevant relationship. Check whose declaration is available; one person's statement does not cover all authors.

[1][2]

Move from the connection to the specific decision

ICMJE calls for explanations of sponsor roles, publication restrictions and the nature of authors' data access. A stated independent analysis is useful information, but it is a declaration, not a verification performed by the reader. A separate description of data access and the ability to publish may answer a different concern.

For the fictional report, ask: ‘Where are the supplier's design and reporting roles, authors' complete-data access and publication restrictions described?’ If a public protocol or supplement answers, record its version and wording. If it does not, preserve that precise uncertainty. There is no need to demand participants' records or speculate about hidden personal relationships.

Cochrane treats conflicts as possible routes of influence, not an extra automatic penalty in every risk-of-bias domain. Examine what the actual methods and reporting permit: the specified comparison, planned analyses and completeness of reported outcomes. A methodological limitation does not become proof of a sponsor's motive; methods that limit bias do not become worse merely because a relationship exists.

[2][3]

Finish with an honest summary, not a treatment choice

For this invented case: ‘The report declares municipal funding, free delivery and one consulting relationship; it states no supplier role in analysis, while design involvement, complete-data access and publication restrictions are not explained in the material read.’ That is more informative than ‘industry study—ignore it’ or ‘disclosed—therefore trustworthy’. It establishes no effect of reminders.

For personal questions, use qualified local help

Your own support or treatment is a different question. NHS information gives UK service routes through local services and health professionals; those arrangements are not universal to English-speaking countries. Take personal questions to a qualified local professional, not a funding-label score. Reading public declarations needs no smoking history, medicine list or symptoms entered here.

What to keep in mind

  • Separate project support, research roles and author relationships.
  • A declaration of one absent role does not resolve every role.
  • Name the missing information without inventing an accusation.

Common questions

Does a government grant or a no-conflict statement prove low bias?

No. Neither replaces reading the actual design, analysis and reporting. A declaration makes a relationship visible—or reports its absence—but does not certify how the study was conducted.
