Thursday becomes the following Monday: five different statuses
Fictional example before the original Thursday, proposing the Monday after it. The person has not begun the attempt. These are organisational examples, not a treatment schedule.
| Existing item | What to do now | Status afterwards |
|---|---|---|
| A prepared smoke-free break spot | Check it is still accessible on Monday; keep it if it is. | Retained if still accessible. |
| A private Thursday reminder | Edit this reminder for Monday and remove the obsolete version. | Changed by you. |
| A Thursday call with a friend | Ask whether Monday works; do not copy the old agreement. | Pending until the friend agrees. |
| A Friday consultation | Ask the service whether it should stay on Friday or be rearranged. | Existing booking, not automatically Monday. |
| A date-linked medicine instruction | Ask the prescriber or pharmacist about the changed plan. | Not recalculated from the new date. |
Name the changed constraint, not just another date
An added work trip and ‘I will feel more ready next week’ are different kinds of reasons. Name what made the original day impractical and what will actually be different on the proposed day. A calendar change cannot remove a constraint that will still be there.
This page is for a change made before the original day and before starting. If you already began, keep an honest record of that start; changing future plans does not erase what happened.
Read the example by responsibility, not by date arithmetic
The person in the example proposes Monday instead of Thursday. The prepared break spot may remain usable; only its availability needs checking. The private reminder is theirs to edit. The friend's agreement belongs to both people, and the consultation belongs to the service's booking process.
Friday's consultation may still be useful before the new start. Do not cancel it merely because it was after the old Thursday, or assume it can be moved to Monday. Tell the service what changed and ask what applies to that appointment. For medicine-related dates, use the responsible professional's response, not a self-calculated offset.
Close each open request separately
If the friend replies ‘Tuesday, not Monday’, record Tuesday as the offered time. That is not a Monday call. Decide what ordinary smoke-free activity you can do yourself on Monday without needing an immediate reply.
Once a revised arrangement is confirmed, replace its old reminder. If it remains unanswered, keep it marked pending rather than sending repeated messages or marking it complete. Share only the part of the plan relevant to that person; your private notes need not travel with the request.
Preparation advice is not permission to postpone indefinitely
NCI's quit-day guidance allows a few additional preparation days when someone is not ready and asks for a sensible date. Use that time to address what is missing, rather than simply moving the same unfinished plan.
If changing the date repeatedly leaves the same obstacle unresolved, ask a qualified local cessation service or clinician about that obstacle. Explain the practical problem and any existing appointment or instruction. Do not use another date edit to decide an individual care question.
What to keep in mind
Common questions
Does everything need to be ready before I can settle a new date?
You can choose a concrete proposed date while identifying unresolved arrangements. Do not mark another person's time or a service booking confirmed without a response. Personal care questions belong with the responsible professional.
Should I restart my progress record?
Not to hide an actual start or past smoking. Here the attempt has not begun: you are changing a future plan, not rewriting your history.
