Combustion creates the mixture
Tobacco, paper and additives change when heated and burned. The smoke drawn through the cigarette and smoke released from its burning end overlap, but they are not chemically identical. Temperature, oxygen and puff pattern all change what is measured.
Nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar are not synonyms
Nicotine is the main drug driving dependence. Carbon monoxide can reduce the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. ‘Tar’ groups particle material left after nicotine and water are subtracted under a test method; it does not name a single toxin.
Why chemical counts differ
Agencies may count compounds detected in tobacco, fresh smoke, aged smoke or the body after exposure. Detection methods also improve. A difference in totals does not make the core evidence contradictory.
