Define the rule before the next visit
“Nobody smokes inside, at any time” includes residents, visitors, carers and people using borrowed cars. Smoking in another room, at a window or when others are out still permits an indoor source. Ask before a visit or journey so nobody has to negotiate in a smoky room.
A car needs its own agreement
The rule applies while parked or moving and whether or not passengers are present. An open window does not eliminate smoke exposure. If a passenger or driver wants to smoke, agree beforehand to stop in a permitted outdoor place away from others and entrances; there is no universal safe distance supplied here.
What can remain after the rule
Older deposits on fabrics and surfaces are a different question from newly emitted smoke. Smoke entering from neighbouring units, workplaces or other homes is also outside the household’s own source rule. A room that smells better is not thereby certified clear of pollutants.
A usable household conversation
For example: “The living room, kitchen and our car are smoke-free for everyone. We will explain it before visitors arrive.” If the agreement is breached, stop the indoor source and restate the rule; do not treat it as a reason for surveillance or blame.
