One published route: Australia’s Quitline

Quit’s Australian service page tells callers to phone 13 7848 and say they need an interpreter. It describes arranging one as soon as possible and a callback with an interpreter. It also identifies an ‘Interpreter required’ option on its callback form. These are actual instructions for this Australian service, not a worldwide quitline rule.

The same page limits some callback and messaging options to named states and territories. Use the instructions for your location and confirm how the interpreter will join; a messaging button does not itself establish interpreted counselling. If you cannot make the first request by voice, ask the local service about another booking route.

Make the booking about the conversation, not just the language label

Saying ‘Chinese’ may leave Mandarin, Cantonese or another spoken language unresolved. Name the language you use comfortably, then confirm the date, whether the interpreter will be on the phone or present, and who is arranging them. If an interpreter cannot attend that slot, ask whether a different time or another local service is available.

Confirm any charge before agreeing to the arrangement. A free counselling service does not establish the cost of every external interpreting option. If the answer is only ‘we have translated information’, explain that you need to ask and answer questions during the appointment.

Keep your own voice in an interpreted conversation

A friend can help you make the request without automatically becoming your interpreter. If you would rather not discuss smoking or health details in front of them, say that you want the service to arrange language support and a private conversation. Ask who will take part before you begin.

Speak in short parts and allow time for interpretation. You can stop and say, ‘I did not understand that; please explain it again.’ At the end, describe the agreed next step in your own words and ask whether you have understood. If a clinical instruction remains unclear, ask the professional to clarify it; do not guess from a translation app or change an instruction yourself.

What to keep in mind

  • Name the spoken language or dialect.
  • Confirm interpreted conversation and callback, not just translated pages.
  • An unclear instruction is a reason to ask again.
